    Simple model of big-crunch/big-bang transition

We present classical and quantum dynamics of a test particle in the compactified Milne space. Background spacetime includes one compact space dimension undergoing contraction to a point followed by expansion. Quantization consists in finding a self-adjoint representation of the algebra of particle observables. Our model offers some insight into the nature of the cosmic singularity.Comment: 17 pages, no figures, RevTeX4, accepted for publication in Class. Quantum Gra

A hybrid TIM-NOMA scheme for the Broadcast Channel

Future mobile communication networks will require enhanced network efficiency and reduced system overhead. Research on Blind Interference Alignment and Topological Interference Management (TIM) has shown that optimal Degrees of Freedom can be achieved, in the absence of Channel State Information at the transmitters. Moreover, the recently emerged Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) scheme suggests a different multiple access approach, compared to the orthogonal methods employed in 4G, resulting in high capacity gains. Our contribution is a hybrid TIM-NOMA scheme in K-user cells, where users are divided into T groups. By superimposing users in the power domain, we introduce a two-stage decoding process, managing inter-group interference based on the TIM principles, and intra-group interference based on Successful Interference Cancellation, as proposed by NOMA. We show that the hybrid scheme can improve the sum rate by at least 100% compared to Time Division Multiple Access, for high SNR values.Comment: 11 pages, Published at "EAI Endorsed Transactions on Wireless Spectrum

Multi-lingual agents through multi-headed neural networks

    Get PDF
This paper considers cooperative Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning, focusing on emergent communication in settings where multiple pairs of independent learners interact at varying frequencies. In this context, multiple distinct and incompatible languages can emerge. When an agent encounters a speaker of an alternative language, there is a requirement for a period of adaptation before they can efficiently converse. This adaptation results in the emergence of a new language and the forgetting of the previous language. In principle, this is an example of the Catastrophic Forgetting problem which can be mitigated by enabling the agents to learn and maintain multiple languages. We take inspiration from the Continual Learning literature and equip our agents with multi-headed neural networks which enable our agents to be multi-lingual. Our method is empirically validated within a referential MNIST based communication game and is shown to be able to maintain multiple languages where existing approaches cannot.Comment: Cooperative AI workshop NeurIPS 202

Physical Activity Sensing via Stand-Alone WiFi Device

    Get PDF
WiFi signals for physical activity sensing shows promising potential for many healthcare applications due to its potential for recognising various everyday activities, non-invasive nature and low intrusion on privacy. Traditionally, WiFi-based sensing uses the Channel State Information (CSI) from an offthe- shelf WiFi Access Point (AP) which transmits signals that have high pulse repetition frequencies. However, when there are no users on the communication network only beacon signals are transmitted from the WiFi AP which significantly deteriorates the sensitivity and specificity of such systems. Surprisingly WiFi based sensing under these conditions have received little attention given that WiFi APs are frequently in idle state. This paper presents a practical system based on passive radar technique which does not require any special setup or preset firmware and able to work with any commercial WiFi device. To cope with the low density of beacon signal, a modified Cross Ambiguity Function (CAF) has been proposed to reduce redundant samples in the recorded. In addition, an external device has been developed to send WiFi probe request signals and stimulate an idle AP to transmit WiFi probe responses thus generate usable transmission signals for sensing applications without the need to authenticate and join the network. Experimental results prove that proposed concept can significantly improve activity detection and is an ideal candidate for future healthcare and security applications

Dynamical Ambiguities in Singular Gravitational Field

We consider particle dynamics in singular gravitational field. In 2d spacetime the system splits into two independent gravitational systems without singularity. Dynamical integrals of each system define sl(2,R)sl(2,R) algebra, but the corresponding symmetry transformations are not defined globally. Quantization leads to ambiguity. By including singularity one can get the global SO(2.1)SO(2.1) symmetry. Quantization in this case leads to unique quantum theory.Comment: 7 pages, latex, no figures, submitted for publicatio
